Lungy isn't responding to my breathing, what should I do?

It sometimes takes some practice to get Lungy to work as intended. Use Lungy in a relaxed and quiet place. Sit upright, with your tummy relaxed. Breathe in through your nose, then breathe out through your mouth as if you are blowing out a birthday candle at the bottom of the screen. Aim to breathe across the bottom of your phone, where the microphone is. If you do it correctly, Lungy's visuals will respond - this shows Lungy is picking up your breathing.

If you're having trouble positioning the phone correctly, Lungy can guide you using the camera. This will show you the correct orientation and distance to hold the phone, so that Lungy can pick up your breathing. If you're already an expert on using Lungy, or would rather skip this step, just disable 'Face-Tracking' in 'Settings'.

If it still feels too tricky, you can adjust the sensitivity of breath detection or the breath volume in Settings - this will make the visuals respond more easily, and make the volume bar easier to fill. You can also turn off the breath detection entirely if you want to use Lungy somewhere noisy or with Bluetooth headphones. Just turn off 'Use Microphone' in Settings.

Lungy is designed for you to get creative and explore all of the visuals, music and exercises on offer and create a fun, interactive experience. There's no single right way to use Lungy, we're all different, and the way we use Lungy will be too. One of the best things about Lungy is the variety of visuals and exercises on offer, it is about exploring and finding which combinations you like best. When you are getting started, it might be easiest to try 'Today's Exercise' to discover how things work.

Listen to your body, and if you find 'Today's Exercise' too hard, consider reducing the number of breaths and the duration of your next exercise. Although breathing exercises might be new and feel a little strange at first, you should still feel comfortable and relaxed.

Which breathing exercises should I pick? Lungy is designed for you to explore and have fun. The right exercises are the ones that feel good and fit into your lifestyle.

You can browse and pick breathing exercises based on what they can help with, for example helping you get to sleep or relax after a long day.

You can also pick based on the 'breath pattern' itself - this is the particular rhythm of breaths and breath holds, such as box breathing. You'll find out more about each breathing pattern in the next section!

Lungy offers a range of the popular and effective breathing patterns to help you feel relaxed. If there are any breathing patterns you'd like to see - please let us know! Also, if the timings aren't quite right for you, you can dial them in exactly by creating a Custom Exercise.

What is 4-7-8 breathing? 4-7-8 breathing is simply 4 seconds of breathing in, a 7 second hold, and a long, slow 8 second breath out that can help reduce tension and relax our bodies. These exercises tend to be most effective in the afternoon, if we are feeling a bit tense and stressed. In general, breathing patterns which have a long exhalation help us chill out.

What are Ocean Breaths? Just like the constant ebb and flow of waves in the ocean, ocean breaths are continuous, with no breath holds - each slow, deep breath fades naturally into each equally slow, deep breath out. This rhythmic and soothing breath pattern can help us relax. The timing is based on a number of physiological studies, with 5.5 seconds for breath in and breath out.

What is Sudarshan Kriya? Sudharshan Kriya is a type of yogic breathing that includes a breath in, brief hold, followed by a long, slow breath out, and another brief hold. These slow, deep breaths out, and little pauses can help us relax.

When should I use Lungy?

There's no right time to use Lungy, it's whatever feels right and fits into your routine. Some people use Lungy in the morning to give them a burst of energy to tackle the day, and others use Lungy at night to help them chill out and sleep, but really you can use it whenever.

When you click on an exercise in Lungy, you will see the ideal time of day to complete the exercise, for example in the morning or the evening. The timings are just suggestions - if you want to freestyle it, that's ok too!

How can I fit Lungy into my day? We can make using Lungy a habit by tying it to something we already do at a specific time every day, like brushing our teeth or drinking a cup of coffee in the morning. If you want an extra little nudge to help you stay consistent, you can set up reminders for a specific time in Lungy 'Settings'.

How often should I use Lungy? It's best to start slowly and build up over time. One exercise every day is a great place to start, especially if you are new to breathing exercises. Over time, you can use Lungy more often throughout the day (whenever you need), but there's really no limit, as long as you feel comfortable.

How long should I use Lungy for? Start with a short 1-2 minute exercise, and see how you feel. You can adjust the lengths of all Lungy breathing exercises, and you might find you are able to comfortably do longer exercises with time. Try to explore and find what works best for you - this could mean doing one longer exercise or a few shorter exercises in one session.
